About the Project:
The challenges of the P.S. 111M schoolyard site went beyond its inherent physical characteristics and its programmatic and performance requirements. The project needed a versatile, multi-purpose green infrastructure system capable of managing and infiltrating a five-year storm event, while simultaneously providing diverse and durable play opportunities for thousands of students and neighborhood patrons.
The solution lay in a three-month participatory design curriculum – a collaboration between the Landscape Architects and a Non-Profit Client, and roughly one hundred incredibly knowledgeable, insightful, critical, and inspirational P.S. 111M students – that taught the principles of landscape architecture and stormwater management, while providing a platform for site analysis, brainstorming, and schematic design. The students’ unbridled enthusiasm and imagination pushed the boundaries of conventional green infrastructure thinking, inspiring a transformation.
