About the Project:

Governors Island is a 172-acre island in Upper New York Bay, approximately 800 yards from the southern tip of Manhattan and 400 yards from Brooklyn’s waterfront. Governors Island Phase 1 Park and Public Space dramatically transforms this once-abandoned island from a utilitarian, windswept military base into an accessible, beautiful waterfront park that is at the forefront of resiliency, and a delightful destination for all.

The 30 acres of new park creates memorable new landscapes and offers visitors a range of new experiences: picnicking  on gently sloping lawns, biking the Island’s meandering pathways, swinging with friends on clusters of custom hammocks or playing softball on fields with the Statue of Liberty as a stunning backdrop. The Park pays homage to the vast water and skies of the harbor, its military past, and the democratic notion of an Island accessible to all. Visited by nearly 500,000 people in 2014, Phase 1 catalyzed a vibrant park community and establishes a strong foundation for the Island’s future growth.
