About the Project:

Longwood Gardens’ first-ever Master Plan provides a clear framework for the garden’s next generation, delivering physical strategies for accommodating increased visitation and expanded programming, while building a philosophical foundation that clearly articulates the relevance of gardens to today’s society. The greatest gardens of the world offer timeless qualities: respite, escape, wonder, and the joyous experience of being in a kind of paradise, together. The plan amplifies these qualities to the highest level at Longwood, providing a route to affirm its place as one of the greatest, most beloved gardens of the world. Simultaneously, the master plan solves real problems on-the ground, resulting in a practical, living document that outlines an incremental and ongoing transformation by combining a number of exciting, high-visibility projects with crucial infrastructural and operational upgrades. Simultaneously nuanced and bold, this master plan provides the map for achieving another century of joy and wonder at Longwood Gardens.

Project Location:
Longwood Gardens is a public display garden located in the heart of the bucolic Brandywine River Valley in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Encompassing 1077-acres of gardens, woodlands, meadows, fountains and a four-and-a-half-acre conservatory, Longwood Gardens is the living legacy of Pierre S. du Pont, who designed the site’s formal gardens and conservatories a century ago. Welcoming more than one million guests each year, Longwood inspires and delights through excellence in garden design, horticulture, education, and the arts.
