Newtown Creek Alliance: Restoration Manager

Newtown Creek Alliance (NCA) is a community-based nonprofit organization with the mission to Reveal, Restore, and Revitalize Newtown Creek, a Superfund waterway that borders Brooklyn and Queens. Community engagement, environmental education, and ecological restoration are central to our mission and day-to-day work, as we seek to advance local awareness, stewardship, public access, and advocacy for the waterway and surrounding communities.

NCA is hiring a full-time Restoration Manager to lead our efforts in advocating for, creating, and maintaining habitat, green infrastructure, and public access along Newtown Creek. This position will oversee NCA’s current horticulture and cleanup work at the various outdoor spaces we help maintain, including street-end sites, pocket parks and open spaces, marine-based and intertidal projects, and the Kingsland Wildflowers green roof. Additionally, the Restoration Manager will work closely with the Executive Director to identify, plan, and build collective support for the expansion of more restoration sites and access points on both sides of the waterway.

The Restoration Manager is a clear communicator and highly organized professional with a broad skill set to work as planner, advocate, landscaper, and community organizer. The Restoration Manager oversees the restoration staff and reports to the Executive Director.

Job Functions/Qualifications

Restoration Work (55%)

  • Oversee the planting and maintenance of NCA-managed green spaces and wildlife habitat, including close coordination with restoration staff to establish workplans and timelines;
  • Work with private property owners and city/state agencies to identify new opportunities for creating habitat and green spaces in the industrial areas and shorelines along Newtown Creek;
  • Identify and support restoration-led volunteer programming such as cleanup events and horticulture work (plantings, cutbacks, weeding, etc);
  • Work closely with staff to identify partnerships with local organizations, schools, and community groups to increase restoration opportunities and stewardship;
  • Manage restoration project budgets, timelines, and deliverables within the organization;
  • Develop a maintenance workplan with partners at Kingsland Wildflowers to ensure proper horticulture upkeep of 25,000 sqft. of green roofs and Newtown Native Nursery;
  • Work closely with NCA staff on design and maintenance of intertidal restoration projects.

Public Access Planning and Advocacy (45%)

  • Collaborate with Executive Director to develop and run open space and waterfront access campaign for publicly owned land around Newtown Creek;
  • Develop close working relationships with key stakeholders including city/state agencies, local businesses, community organizations, city-wide coalitions, and restoration advocates; 1
  • Produce presentations and visual materials for restoration and public access projects/proposals;
  • Collaborate with Executive Director to advance long-term restoration planning projects, including coordination with project partners, communication with agencies, tracking permit requirements, and managing budgets.

Preferred Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree in Urban Planning, Environmental Policy, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Science, or related field;
  • At least 3 years of project management experience, preferably in horticulture, landscaping, policy, ecology, or planning;
  • Deep familiarity with urban ecological restoration and green infrastructure practices;
  • Experience managing staff, work plans, and project budgets;
  • Extensive experience with hands-on horticulture work;
  • Experience in creating graphics, compelling presentations, maps, planting plans, site plans, landscape renderings;
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace, Adobe Suite, GIS, CAD, and similar software;
  • Experience working with diverse communities and demographics in NYC, as well as familiarity with neighborhoods in North Brooklyn or Western Queens that border Newtown Creek;
  • Fluency in Spanish.

Required Qualifications

  • A valid NY state driver’s license;
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs;
  • Ability to travel within the Newtown Creek watershed, including the industrial business zones;
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Flexible team player, capable of both working independently and collaborating with colleagues.

Compensation and Schedule

  • This is a full-time, salaried position. The salary range is $72,000 to $76,500 commensurate with skills and experience;
  • NCA offers new full-time employees 15 days paid vacation; 7 sick/personal days; 12 paid holidays.
  • NCA covers 90% of monthly health insurance plan costs;
  • Required flexibility to work evenings and weekends (approximately 3-5 evening/weekend events per month);
  • This is an in-person position. NCA’s offices are located at the Kingsland Wildflowers building in Greenpoint, Brooklyn;
