Posted: Thursday, April 20, 2023
DOT is seeking an urban design and planning student to join the Urban Design Group in Manhattan for an apprenticeship during the summer of 2023 as well as the 2023 – 2024 school year.
The Urban Design Apprentice will assist in executing urban design, streetscape, planning and transportation infrastructure projects of varying scales and complexities. Within a collaborative design studio environment, the apprentice will develop and coordinate strategic neighborhood and area-wide plans and will be responsible for investigating and proposing solutions for specific site conditions and designs; preparing site plans utilizing various computer-aided design and graphics software; reviewing designs and conducting site inspections; and presenting projects to other divisions and governmental agencies, consultants, community organizations and the general public. In addition to working on projects ranging from temporary pilots to permanent capital projects, the apprentice will be integral to producing the Fourth Edition of the Street Design Manual, particularly addressing design changes and guidelines borne out of the agency’s Open Streets and Open Restaurants initiatives. The apprentice will also pursue programs such as the El-Space Initiative aimed at developing a strategic design toolkit and planning framework to optimize space beneath and adjacent to elevated trains, bridges, and highways citywide.
