Multiple Positions: Design Director, Mid-Senior Level PLA and Entry-Senior Project Designers

Coen+Partners is seeking multiple landscape architects and urban designers, from early-career to senior-level experience, for full time, or long-term contract positions in support of a wide range of regional and global projects.  Candidates would support existing and new project teams working on local, regional, and national urban public realm projects , Department of State Bureau of Overseas Building Operations (OBO) Design Excellence projects, and international work that includes a city-wide cycling and pedestrian mobility network and a 22-mile regenerative redevelopment corridor that includes highway removal, 1,000 acres of an urban park, multiple transit-oriented development districts,  comprehensive green and blue infrastructure, and an integrated health and wellness program.

Candidates must be passionate about design, proactive problem-solvers, and highly skilled in conceptualizing, developing and implementing sophisticated and complex landscapes and urban design projects. Key responsibilities for these positions will include leading the design of projects in a multi-disciplinary team setting, fostering a collaborative team environment, and supporting the development of new systems and processes to improve project delivery. These positions will be integral in project visioning, client and community engagement, business development, and the long-range growth and diversification of the studio.

DESIGN DIRECTOR

The Design Director will help lead the ‘Design and Brand’ division with Shane Coen and the other two Design Directors. They will collaborate with all Principals, Directors, Project Managers and Designers to lead and elevate design visioning across all projects throughout the office.  The Design Directors are critical to the future development of the Coen+Partner’s brand identity.  They will be actively engaged in business development, as well as the growth and mentorship of the entire design team.

Preferred candidates will have the following attributes:

  • 10-20 years of design experience in a progressive studio environment
  • Exceptional ability to create and develop strong site-specific concepts of all scales.
  • Developed understanding and passionate approach to contemporary, timeless and context-based design
  • Exceptional ability and proven experience overseeing and driving the design process of multi-disciplinary teams on a range of project sizes
  • Ability to lead and direct the design of multiple projects at once, collaborating with project managers and design team members
  • Discipline and confidence in leading the design and team through complex projects from concept through detailed design and documentation and managerial requirements of project construction.
  • Ability to mentor and develop staff across all skill levels
  • Fluent with Rhino and BIM documentation
  • Desire and ability to travel internationally
  • Minimally a master’s degree in Landscape Architecture, from an accredited program.

Job Description:

  • Develop a strong vision for a project and empower teams to maintain that vision throughout the design and construction process
  • Develop and lead the design of public realm projects through an iterative design process including research, sketching, discussions, and evaluation of results
  • Develop landscape architecture, urban design, and planning concepts that provide strong connections to context and systems
  • Assist in preparing, coordinating, and participating in workshops and charettes with large project teams and clients
  • Advance and evolve the Coen+Partner’s brand and design process

MID-SENIOR LEVEL PROFESSIONAL LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS

Mid-Career and Senior Project Landscape Architects will be the technical lead or share in the technical responsibilities while partnering with Project Managers on individual projects across multiple scales and project types.  They will be rigorous, technically sound, organized managers of the technical and construction process, and collaborative team members and mentors.  They will support coordination with consultant’s design team, clients and contractors and support the quality assurance and control processes.

Our technical team is intimately involved in all project stages creatively solving technical, risk and coordination issues to make sure our big ideas are buildable.

Preferred candidates will have the following attributes:

  • 6-20 years of progressive design and documentation experience in a progressive studio environment
  • Developed understanding and approach to contemporary and contextual based design
  • Demonstrated expertise in organization of pre-concept – construction documentation.
  • Experience overseeing and driving the design development in multi-disciplinary teams on large scale urban projects
  • Comprehensive experience in construction documentation and construction administration of projects of all scales; experience in international work a plus
  • Proficiency with BIM documentation and coordination across multiple software platforms
  • Desire and ability to travel internationally
  • Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Planning, or Urban Design from an accredited program (Bachelor’s degree will be considered for right candidates)

Job Description:

  • Lead and participate on teams in technical schematic, design development and construction documentation, presentation packages, and specifications of complex projects
  • Lead and participate in construction administration and observation (i.e. shop drawing review, tracking submittals, and field visits)
  • Assist in development of detailed workplans for the management of a multi-disciplinary design team
  • Assist in project management and cost control from design inception through construction completion

ENTRY LEVEL – SENIOR DESIGNERS

Project Designers are the primary creative force across all projects in the studio.  They collaborative closely with the Design Directors and Project Managers from the early concept through construction documentation and construction administration. Our designers contribute contextual and regenerative research, graphics modeling and rendering, conceptual design and documentation to support and elevate the overall design vision.  We are committed to developing our designers into complete landscape architects with a comprehensive understanding of the entire profession.

Preferred candidates will have the following attributes:

  • 1-8 years of design experience
  • Ability to take proactive ownership of projects and responsibilities
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment and work independently
  • Developed understanding and approach to contemporary and contextual based planning and design
  • Strong conceptual thinking with an ability to communicate ideas graphically, verbally and in written form
  • Experience working on all stages of a project, from concept design through construction documentation
  • Passion for blue-green and regenerative systems
  • Basic understanding of construction techniques and documentation systems
  • Discipline and confidence in complex problem solving
  • Desire and ability to travel internationally
  • Capacity to work across multiple representation platforms, including hand graphics (sketches and renderings); AutoCAD; Revit; Illustrator; InDesign; Photoshop; Rhino and SketchUp.
  • Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Planning, or Urban Design from an accredited program (Bachelor’s degree will be considered for right candidates)

Job Description:

  • Support project managers in the coordination of multi-disciplinary design teams
  • Develop meaningful research and analysis of physical and cultural context to support design concepts; and products, planting, and materials to support detailed design development
  • Develop conceptual ideas through clear direction, independently and in collaboration with others
  • Support the development of project graphics, diagrams, presentations, renderings, and physical models
  • Support the presentation of design concepts to clients, government agencies, and stakeholders
  • Support the design and implementation of public meetings and community engagement efforts
  • Develop conceptual design ideas into schematic plans
  • With support, develop schematic drawings into construction documents and specifications
  • Review and refine construction documents through quality control processes
  • Support the construction administration process, including site visits, field reports, material selections, mock-up reviews, etc.
