JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture (SSA) at the City College of New York seeks applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in design and sustainability at the entering rank of assistant professor. Appointment is anticipated for Fall 2023.The successful candidate will bridge architecture, landscape architecture, and urban sustainability in our graduate and undergraduate design programs. Teaching responsibilities include design studios in architecture and landscape architecture, as well as required and elective courses in urban sustainability. This position is part of a cluster hire of eight faculty lines across City College dedicated to environmental, cultural, and social justice in New York City. It is expected that this faculty member will have a research focus that engages these pressing concerns in New York and other global cities. This faculty member will also contribute to the Graduate Program in Sustainability in the Urban Environment. The SSA is one of the founding divisions of this interdisciplinary master’s program. Engagement with the Urban Sustainability program will take the form of teaching, curricular coordination, and capstone advising.

The SSA is committed to social and sustainable concerns in design and practice, as well as to providing access to the finest education in the art, history, and technology of architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design to the broadest and most diverse student population. A prospective member of the faculty should be prepared to participate in and contribute to this lively intellectual atmosphere, and join the SSA in its commitment in furthering justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and anti-racism within the academy and the design professions. The Assistant Professor will share responsibility for committee and department assignments including administrative, supervisory and other functions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A Master’s degree in architecture and/or landscape architecture, and a professional license in one of these fields or a Ph.D. in architecture, landscape architecture, or sustainability is required.The candidate must have experience in teaching undergraduate and graduate design studios and lecture courses and seminars in the preferred field of specialty as well asevidence of scholarly work in this same field.A deep commitment to city life and the fundamental principles of a public institution of higher education with a highly diverse student body is expected.The candidate should be prepared to give a public lecture and meet with students.
