Historically, playspaces have been treated as a specialized exception within landscape architecture. This has led to design conventions—such as flat planes, synthetic surfacing, and highly stylized plastic elements—that contrast with the discipline’s broader design values. This talk will attempt to recontextualize American playspaces, and will present strategies, tools, and precedents to enable Landscape Architects approach the design of playspaces with the same excitement, rigor and novelty that they bring to their work at large. This CEU event is a live webinar; it will not be offered as an in-person event.
The talk will be led by Max D’Aurizio, Director of Landscape at APE Studio. Max grew up exploring a first-growth oak forest, where he learned early on that nature is the best playground. A Cornell University graduate, he has focused his career as a Landscape Architect on designing destination playgrounds, regional parks, and inclusive learning environments—creating cohesive play spaces where all children can learn and grow through play.
Registration is required. Please contact Martha Hall (mhall@apeoriginal.com) with any questions.
