| Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) is typically built for multi-purposes: reducing peak volume, and filtering pollutants while providing benefits of green space such as improving air quality, enhancing aesthetics, creating habitat for wildlife, reducing urban heat island effect, and contributing to community revitalization. Established vegetation is used to achieve the designed functions. |
| However, plants often fail before establishment. It is particularly harder for bigger plants such as trees to get established in GSI. The main reason is that plants undergo constant stresses: too wet or too dry. By design, GSI is flooded during storms. Also by design, porous growth media is used to drain & dry out quickly between rain events. The extreme variations in soil moisture make it very hard for any plants to survive. There are many other stresses such as compacted soil, limited soil volume, deicing salt, pollution, and the urban heat island effect. This session will review novel technologies that can address some of these problems. For example, the abundant stormwater can be captured and released on demand to mitigate the water stresses, wash off salts, lower temperatures, and reduce pollutants in the stormwater runoff. By making use the stormwater, it automatically reduces the total stormwater runoff, which is one of the primary goals of GSI. |
