Join ASLA-NY at ABC Stone for a special book talk with Susannah Drake, celebrating her new release, Sponge Park: Gowanus Canal.
Long before the concept of sponge cities emerged, the idea began with sponge parks—most notably along Brooklyn’s Gowanus Canal. Designed by Drake and her former firm DLANDstudio Architecture + Landscape Architecture, the project was completed in 2016 and recognized with National AIA and ASLA Urban Design Awards and the inaugural Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian National Design Award for Climate Action in 2020.

Susannah Churchill Drake FAIA FASLA is a Principal at Sasaki and founder of DLANDstudio. Susannah lectures globally about resilient urban design and has taught at Harvard, IIT, Syracuse, and the Cooper Union. Through a pioneering methodology of partnering with communities on grants from organizations including the Graham Foundation, the J.M. Kaplan Foundation, AIA, NOAA, EPA, NEIWPCC, NYSDEC, and NYSCA, she enables green infrastructure and park creation. Susannah was recognized as an Architectural League Emerging Voice and with the AIA Young Architect Award. Her award-winning work is consistently at the forefront of innovative urban climate adaptation.
Susannah received the inaugural Cooper Hewitt National Design Award for Climate Action. Her book “Sponge Park,” was recently published by Park Books. Drake’s work is in the permanent collection of MoMA, the Cooper Hewitt, and was exhibited at the 2023 Venice Biennale.
Susannah graduated from Dartmouth College and earned March/ MLA degrees from Harvard GSD.
