New York City’s Privately Owned Public Spaces (POPS) are publicly accessible indoor or outdoor areas built and maintained by private developers in exchange for zoning bonuses, such as permission to build larger buildings. Created in 1961, the program has grown to more than 590 spaces citywide. Early POPS often lacked amenities and were not an asset to the community, prompting reforms in 1975 that required specific amounts of particular design features like seating, landscaping, and signage.
ASLA-NY, in collaboration with the Municipal Arts Society of New York (MAS), invites you on a guided tour of three of NYC’s iconic POPS. Hear directly from the visionary landscape architects who designed them as they share the stories, design ideas, and impact of these celebrated public spaces. Featured landscape architects include:
