The ASLA-NY Plant Research Group:
The ASLA-NY plant research initiative is for professionals to collectively expand and share our knowledge of NYC plants. The research group, co-led by Nancy Seaton, Michael Spina, and other members will meet for walks at different locations in NYC – one per month from May through October.
The walks are open to both members and non-members who are interested in expanding their knowledge and awareness of plant systems in the profession of landscape architecture.

Group Leaders:
Nancy Seaton is passionate about plants, site histories, and resilient, urban ecological systems. Her breadth of experience includes 15 years in landscape architecture practice designing and managing all stages of design at a variety of scales, contributing her planting expertise and site research to award-winning projects. Her deep knowledge is grounded in 14 years as a horticulturist and teacher at Brooklyn Botanic Garden. She has held academic appointments at The Spitzer School of Architecture at CCNY, and the University of Connecticut and is a frequent guest lecturer in MLA programs, speaking about planting design centered on reference ecologies, biodiversity, and adaptation.
Michael Spina, RLA, CERP, works at HDR. Drawing on over a decade of experience in ecological landscape design, he works with project teams to develop strategies that enhance ecosystem structure and function. He is focused primarily on the planning, design and execution of living shorelines and green infrastructure, paying particular attention to waterfront access, soils, streetscapes, and habitat restoration.
