Rebecca McMackin: Beauty and Butterflies: Adventures in Designed Ecology at Brooklyn Bridge Park

Our gardens can be stunningly beautiful while also  providing habitat for the wildlife that enriches our lives.  For ecological horticulturist Rebecca McMackin, cultivating habitat is central to  landscape management. In her 10 years as Director of Horticulture at Brooklyn Bridge  Park, Rebecca oversaw 85 acres of diverse, organic landscapes, all managed to support  birds, butterflies, and soil microorganisms. Join us to learn how to use ecological insight and experimentation to develop new  management strategies – and why careful observation and documentation of wildlife in  your gardens is crucial to their success.

Charles Birnbaum: The Olmstead in All of Us

This presentation draws on forty years of professional practice – incorporating big ideas  and anecdotes, and aims to lift the veil on those in Olmsted’s practice and his successor  firms from 1857-1979 (beyond those named Olmsted).

Raymond Jungles Making Nature Comfortable in the City

In this presentation, Raymond Jungles will discuss the firm’s commitment to  reintroducing native plant species to their original habitats where they once  thrived. Jungles aspires to foster a harmonious coexistence with nature and  enable individuals to immerse themselves in the beauty, contemplation, and  profound connection with the Earth that has evolved over countless eons.  Examples of native plant combinations and establishment of ecological  communities in urban places will be showcased in recent projects.
