Focus: The Greenway Botanical Garden at the Naval Cemetery is a peaceful, reflective, restorative sacred place created in collaboration with Nature Sacred, Brooklyn Greenway Initiative, Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects and Marvel Architects. The 1.8 acre landscape was designed as a memorial to those laid to rest here but also as an uplifting ecological landscape where visitors can witness an abundance of life in the pollinators of all kind that thrive here. Elemental in approach, the design includes a meandering boardwalk floating over a wildflower meadow, amphitheater seating, a sacred grove, a Nature Sacred bench, and granite blocks providing a nod to memorial but also an opportunity for a series joyful leaps over the meadow. The presentation will outline the design process in developing both concepts and detailed construction methods in creating this unique public landscape. Topics will include research into land use history, plant communities and pollinator habitat, as well as construction innovations in meeting challenge of a restriction on excavation due to the site being a burial ground and archaeological site of historic significance.
