Join ASLA-NY and Urban Sketcher’s Richard Alomar for an instructional sketch tour of South Harlem. We’ll begin at Frederick Douglas Circle and loop through south Harlem with stops in Central Park, Duke Ellington Circle, Marcus Garvey Park and ending at the heart of Harlem, the Apollo Theater. We will be stopping for lunch at Marcus Garvey Park where the Mount Morris Fire Watchtower, the last surviving NYC fire watchtower, recently completed renovation. Tentative Schedule:
10:00 – Meet at the SE corner Frederick Douglas Circle at the entrance to Central Park
10:10-12:30 – Morning Field Sketch Session at Frederick Douglas Circle then continuing in North Central Park to Duke Ellington Circle.
12:30-1:00 – Lunch, guest speaker, informal sketching and drawing review.
1:00-1:45 – Afternoon Field Sketch Session
1:45-2:00 – Drawing Review and closing comments
Richard Alomar, RLA, ASLA, CLARB
Richard teaches design and construction to undergraduate and graduate students in the department of Landscape Architecture at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He promotes sketching through sketch-walks, lectures, research and academic writing. His teaching extends to school children, design professionals and to the general public with sketching programs in New York City and across New Jersey. He has an undergraduate degree in Agronomy from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez and an MLA from Louisiana State University.
