We hope you will join us in celebrating equitable, inclusive public streetscapes that elevate the quality of life in our city and illustrate how open streets should continue beyond COVID.

When:  Thursday, September 17, 2019 from 2:00pm-6:00pm

Where: West End Avenue between 88-94th Streets, Manhattan

PARK(ing) Day is an annual international event where residents, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform curbside parking spots into public spaces. Activations often take the form of creating temporary parklets for community use and providing opportunities for art and civic engagement. The mission of these happenings is to call attention to the importance of urban open space and generate a dialogue about the benefits of public green space to elevate the health and quality of urban life for the surrounding neighborhood.

This year we are teaming up with an extraordinarily diverse group of partners to transform the existing Open Street on West End Avenue. We will be activating not just parking spaces but the entire street space for 6 city blocks! Activities and stations will be dispersed to allow for safe physical distancing but will be connected with a common goal–celebrating streets for people and communities. We need to collectively envision new ways to adapt our street infrastructure and public spaces to promote health, vibrancy and equity. Join us on September 17 to experience safe community connections and to share ideas for reenvisioning our streets as public spaces to encourage a permanent continuation of open streets.

Activations include a temporary parklet created by the American Society of Landscape Architects New York (ASLA-NY), NYC Public Design Commission, and American Planning Association New York Metro (APA-NYM). Jody Sperling/Time Lapse Dance presents a performance-installation of a new work themed around plastic pollution. A string quartet, composed of musicians from the Met Orchestra will perform folk dance-inspired repertory. Good Energy Wellness & Movement will provide free and socially-dstanced Tai Chi Easy™ /Qigong lessons. Bar Crawl Radio will be live on the street during the event. Other activities include chalk-art, mask-making, streetscape visioning projects and civic engagements.
