The current crisis that grips New York City has challenged the design community to come together. The AIA Unified Taskforce for City and State challenges you and the broader AEC community to examine several areas of the built environment, from temporary measures applied to public streets to vacant ground-floor spaces. The findings we uncover are meant to build on New York City’s existing Street Design Manual to integrate with existing guidance.

The Challenge is a call to our community to reimagine public space to equitably improve the health, access, and safety of New York City that informs our future. The Challenge is planned to begin with authentic community collaboration and expert panels followed by 5 borough-based workshops that generate ideas for the entire city. Afterwards, we will issue an open call to match community stakeholders with AEC teams to develop new ideas and strategies that our City can implement.

In our first workshop, held on August 24th, we heard from community representatives from each of the 5 boroughs on their experiences.

In our second workshop on September 23rd, we will bring NYCEDC, DCP, and a series of experts into the discussion to hear from the City on their goals and challenges, to provide a summary of the key messages we heard from the community listening session, and to provide the viewpoints of the NYC design community in essential issues that should be considered in the borough workshops and the development of the NYC design guidelines.
