Today landscape architects are using highly specified soils for planting that need to perform in intensive urban environments. The questions abound: How are we to know which approaches work best for our specific applications? How are we to make choices between approaches? Which soil practices are sustainable? Do we obliterate a lab tested soil by moving it to the site? How do we keep abreast of the developing science? Join us for two nights of presentations and discussion on this foundational aspect of the profession with internationally acclaimed experts.

Tools in the Toolbox and How to Use Them
Tim Craul, CPSSc, President Craul Soil Scientists. As a soil Scientist, Tim Reviews Landscape Architect design documents for conformance to soil properties required for sustainable plant growth, designs and develops soil physical and chemical properties to provide sustainable plant growth. He also investigates sites to determine soil physical and chemical properties for landscape construction, and develops construction specifications for the proper manufacture, handling, and installation of soils for planting and stormwater management. Provide construction administration to oversee the installation and conformance to planting soil
Soil Mixing to Spec: Getting it right
Chris Siciliano, Sales Director Stancills Soil and Gravel. Not every job has soil requirements that can be met with pre-designed, mass-manufactured, off-the-shelf mixes. While having their own lines of pre-designed soils, Stancills is a specialty soil blender that is built to address these unique concerns. As Stancill’s lead soil designer, Chris’ focus is designing soil blends for various industries and working with the designers to meet the needs of their specific project.
The Soil Archives: The Client Connection
Laura Solano, FASLA, Principal Michael Van Valkenburg Landscape Architects. For 25 years she has been a leading force in developing the firm’s extensive portfolio of award-winning public parks, urban open spaces, and cultural/institutional projects. Her work has been widely published in design journals and books, including the 2011 book, Reconstructing Urban Landscapes: The Recent Projects of Michael Van Valkenburg Associates. She has also authored articles on public process, urban soil, sustainability, and local Boston landscapes.
As an advocate for the profession, she speaks frequently in venues such the ASLA Annual Meeting, the National Building Museum, the Building Stone Institute, the Chicago Botanic Gardens, the Ecological Landscaping Association, and the AIA Annual Conference. She is committed to the development of design students and has served as lecturer, juror, and mentor at the universities of Harvard, Pennsylvania, Toronto, Texas, Virginia, and Colorado. Other activities include serving on the Editorial Board for Architecture Boston Magazine, working on Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES) committee for soil, and participating in the Mayor’s Institute for City Design workshops in Charleston, SC, and Tulsa, OK. In 2010, she received the Boston Society of Architects Women in Design Award of Excellence and was featured in “Leaders in the Field: Women in Landscape Architecture”, a film by Julie Gawendo and Izabela Riano. Currently she serves on the executive board for the Landscape Architecture Foundation.

Interpreting soil specifications
James Urban FASLA, Urban Trees and Soils. Jim has written and lectured extensively about soil and urban tree planting and has been responsible for the introduction of many innovations and current standards relating to urban tree plantings and soil specifications. His most recent book, Up by Roots, was published by the International Society of Arboriculture. He has been a visiting lecturer on the subject of urban soils and tree planting at Harvard University and numerous other universities across the United States and has presented at conferences across the United States, Canada, Europe, Brazil, Australia, and South East Asia. He was instrumental in the development of Structural Cells (Silva Cells), structural planting soils, micro root paths, and macro soil trench techniques, and has been credited with helping to re-awaken the profession of landscape architecture to the skills required to successfully plant trees in difficult urban soils.
In 1997, the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) awarded him a National Merit Award for his work on urban trees and the following year he was made a Fellow in the ASLA in recognition of this contribution to the profession. In 2007 he was awarded the ASLA Medal of Excellence for his “significant and sustained contributions to Landscape Architecture.” In 2013, the International Society of Arboriculture gave him its Award of Achievement in recognition of his “sustained efforts and contributions to the advancement of the ISA.” The office has worked on many architecturally and historically significant properties including the National Gallery of Art, the Hirschhorn Museum, the National Geographic Society Headquarters, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Dumbarton Oaks, the Martin Luther King Memorial, The American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial and the National Mall Turf Reconstruction Project.
Soils of Our Lives
Tatiana Morin Executive Director New York City Urban Soils Institute.With beginnings in geology, Tatiana moved to hydrogeology and then rooted herself in soils. Humbled by the complex interconnectedness of our whole environment through soils—how soils connect our cultures, disciplines and backgrounds, and how similar we are, in fact, to soils, she is committed to being a life-long student of soils. The beauty of symbiogenesis blows her mind, and she feels there’s very little that compares to it in positivity. Tatiana would rather live outside, has a mini farm, and loves composting toilets! Her motto “Take care of your own sh**”.
How to Break Your Planting Soil
Paul Josey, PLA, ASLA, ISA; Principal, WOLF JOSEY Landscape Architects.Paul co-founded Wolf Josey Landscape Architects in 2014 and their work is a diverse range of civic, academic, institutional and private projects primarily throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. He has specific expertise in urban and campus design, tree preservation, planting soils, construction, native plants and creative stormwater management.
Invested in supporting healthy trees, Paul has served on the board for the Tree and Soil Research Fund as well as the Charlottesville Tree Commission and the PLACE Design Task Force helping to guide decision making within the city. Prior to Wolf Josey, Paul was as a Project Manager at Nelson Byrd Woltz and Urban Trees + Soils for ten years with a focus on urban, historic, campus and institutional projects. He oversaw campus masterplans and the implementation of various mixed use developments, urban parks, memorials and campuses.
