Mission Statement:
The Advocacy committee seeks to serve our chapter by raising awareness and supporting policies at the state and local level that primarily:
- Increase public visibility and understanding of Landscape Architecture as a profession
- Promote diversity, equity and inclusion within the profession of Landscape Architecture
- Align with ASLA National efforts: “Climate Change, Resilience and Biodiversity” and “Equity and Environmental Justice”
These goals are updated every two years through a poll which our chapter members complete.
In addition to these primary goals, we also support good stewardship of the environment, healthy communities, recognition and conservation of historic cultural heritage, greener transportation corridors, effective energy and cost-efficient landscape design, and others. We welcome input from our members, and invite you to join our meetings where you can help us advocate for our profession.

2024 NYSCLA LOBBY DAY

On Tuesday, May 7, members of ASLA-NY (Downstate) and NYU-ASLA (Upstate) met at the New York State Capitol to speak with our state-level elected officials during the New York State Council of Landscape Architects (NYSCLA) annual Lobby Day:

- Jacob Glazer, ASLA-NY, co-chair of ASLA-NY Advocacy Committee

An annual event, Lobby Day affords members of NYSCLA, which represents all New York State members of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), the opportunity to engage in-person with our elected officials about key pieces of legislature while the State Assembly and Senate are in session.
In addition to ten individual appointments scheduled throughout the day, – resulting in commitments to endorse and support the legislature we hoped to prioritize – we were incredibly proud to attend the recognition of ASLA and its 125th anniversary received from both the New York State Assembly and Senate.
A proclamation was read on the Senate floor by @Senator Lea Webb; an identical resolution was read from the Assembly floor by New York State Representative, @Dr. Anna R. Kelles, who represents Assembly District 125. Special thanks to @Scott Whitham (NYU-ASLA), who did a fantastic job of connecting with his local representatives to secure their endorsement and commitment.
