The ASLA-CCNY Student Chapter is in search of speakers for the upcoming student-led Rising Urbanists conference, Queering Landscapes.

What does it mean to ‘queer’ landscapes? How can we approach queerness through various different lenses in our work? – The eighth edition of the Rising Urbanists Conference, Queering Landscapes, delves into some of the many meanings of ‘queerness’ within the field of landscape architecture and related fields.
In crafting this conference, we are looking for speakers to join in on the conversation of Queerness through social space, ecology, design, aesthetics and more. As students, we are building a stage for professionals to spotlight their insight, voice, and perspective on the following ideas:
- Queerness by definition – Differing in some way from what is usual or normal; eccentric, unconventional. I.e. aesthetics of decay, environmental activism, compost art.
- Queer landscape design can be used to support community development through equitable and beautiful landscapes.
- Queer ecology is the idea that nature is not separate from queerness, but is instead part of it.
- “Queer landscapes can feature queer design elements and not be designed by queer people, nor used by queer people, but they feature queer design elements.” – Queer Landscapes, Sami Sikanas
Through these ideas we will explore how we can ‘queer’ our future work in Landscape Architecture.
