About the Project:
The Pier 42 Upland Park and Pier (Pier 42) completes a critical missing link of public access along Manhattan’s East River shoreline. This is a spectacular transformation of an eight-acre abandoned industrial shoreline, particularly for over 100,000 underserved residents of public housing that lie upland of the project. Superstorm Sandy washed over the site and into the vulnerable neighborhood leaving residents without electricity and services for months. From this trauma emerged a strong collective voice expressed by diverse community residents for a park that would represent their vision for ecological resilience, social, and environmental justice.
