With sweeping views of the Berkshire and Catskill mountains, Sutherland Pond’s once-inaccessible 35-acre shoreline has been transformed into an accessible, resilient, and ecologically vibrant nature preserve, developed in partnership with the Columbia Land Conservancy.

The project integrates accessible trails, a sensitively crafted boardwalk, and enhanced biodiversity across wetlands and grasslands, preserving critical habitats for nesting grassland birds and wetland species. The preserve’s design celebrates regional ecosystems, unfolding in a carefully choreographed sequence from wetland to upland forest through diverse, ecologically rich landscapes.

The grounds and boardwalk, constructed with locally sourced and environmentally sensitive materials, feature year-round, inclusive programming for all ages and abilities. The trail network, punctuated by strategically placed resting nodes, offers a manageable cadence for moments of pause, reflection, or discovery. The Ooms project exemplifies the harmonious integration of public recreation and accessibility, balancing inclusive visitor experiences with the protection and preservation of an ecologically sensitive landscape.
