About the Project:
Adapting a decommissioned urban fountain, the Fountain of the Fairs Mist Garden creates a cooling cloud that refreshes visitors on summer days. It is also a model for sustainable water usage. The design preserved the perimeter granite coping of the earlier Reflecting Pool dating from the 1964 World’s Fair, but raised the basin floor to become an accessible, multi‐use plaza.
The mist is supplied by more than 500 fog nozzles set in the pavement surface, using less water in total than a typical playground spray shower. Along the sides of the mist garden, lounge chairs and benches provide generous seating for relaxing, cooling off, and peoplewatching in the foreground of the park’s iconic Unisphere.
