About ASLA-NY

ASLA-NY is the New York Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects, the national professional association representing landscape architects.  ASLA-NY was founded in 1914 (the second chapter of the national organization) to advocate for and serve members studying and practicing landscape architecture in the New York Metropolitan-Long Island region.  The territory of the Chapter encompasses the five boroughs of New York City, Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island, and Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Orange and Rockland counties.  The Chapter is comprised of over 500 members who engage in public, private and academic practices that participate in the careful stewardship, wise planning and artful design of our cultural and natural environments.  New York State has two chapters; New York Upstate represents the communities north of Westchester.

What is Landscape Architecture?

A crumbling, 80 year-old elevated railway line given new life as an aerial greenway with winding walkways, areas for calm reflection, and hundreds of species of plants and trees. A post-industrial waterfront strewn with abandoned warehouses, reconceived as a modern green oasis offering unfettered access to the shoreline and unparalleled views of the city. The Highline and Brooklyn Bridge Park-two shining examples that illustrate the transformative powers of landscape architecture.

Landscape architecture encompasses the best elements of both art and science. It is the art of designing and creating aesthetically pleasing surroundings in delicate balance with the science of devising and maintaining both natural and built environments. Landscape architects make our cities more livable, our parks and public spaces more enjoyable and functional, and our precious and fragile ecosystems more resilient and sustainable in the face of global climate change. While keeping pace with the ever changing forces of nature and technology, landscape architects use their creative talent and vision to create environments that impact the way we live, work and play.

The American Society of Landscape Architects

Founded in 1899, The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) is the national professional association for landscape architects, representing 17,000 members in 48 professional chapters and 68 student chapters. The Society’s mission is to lead, to educate, and to participate in the careful stewardship, wise planning, and artful design of our cultural and natural environments. Members of the Society use the “ASLA” suffix after their names to denote membership and their commitment to the highest ethical standards of the profession.  Learn more about landscape architecture online at www.asla.org
